ECHO DHC-2800 X-Series Hedge Trimmer

When it comes to hedge trimmers, speed and control are everything. Too slow, and you’re fighting through branches. Too aggressive, and you lose precision when shaping.

The Echo 56V DHC-2800 Hedge Trimmer aims to strike that balance with high blade speed, Pro-level build quality, and a feature set designed for real-world efficiency. On paper, it brings serious performance to the table—but the real question is whether it translates into smoother, faster trimming where it counts.

Pros

  • Fast cutting speed
  • One of the lightest in its class
  • Near-perfect balance
  • Easy maintenance
  • Also available with 22-inch knives

Cons

  • No significant drawbacks

Echo 56V Hedge Trimmer Performance

Cutting Power

At its heart, the Echo DHC-2800 houses a brushless motor that powers the knives up to 4,600 SPM. This is blazing fast for a hedge trimmer, as many of the models I’ve tested in the past top out around 3,500 SPM. Echo gives you two speed modes to work with, but you can also feather the trigger to maintain a little more control.

These ultra-sharp blades have a max cut capacity of 1.1 inches, which is pretty standard for this style of hedge trimmer. There are some battery-powered models that hit the 1.5-inch mark, but Echo’s capacity is more than enough for most common trimming tasks.

Hands-On Testing

Hands-on testing

During our testing, this trimmer performed like a Pro-grade tool. It’s much quieter than many of the battery-powered trimmers I’ve used, and the vibration level is extremely low. The overall power level is perfect and allowed us to glide through some overgrown hedges, shrubs, and vines like a hot knife through butter. Admittedly, I did get hung up in the smaller vines a few times, but it was only temporary.

The real advantage of this trimmer is the long bar length. The impressive reach is extremely handy when shaping tall hedges and helps to keep the cut more uniform as you make your passes. On top of that, the longer bar can speed up your workflow on those bigger jobs.

We were also impressed by the ergonomics, especially the rotating handle. The mechanism is well within reach and rotates smoothly, so you can easily make adjustments on the fly.

All in, if you’re thinking about replacing your old corded or gas trimmer, this is a solid upgrade.

Weight and Balance

Size and Weight

The Echo DHC-2800 weighs 7.2 pounds as a bare tool, 9.1 pounds with the kitted 2.5 Ah battery, and measures 49 inches from end to end. While I do like the trimmer’s weight, it does have a slight forward bias, which is to be expected with a bar this long.

Even at nine pounds, the trimmer is still very easy to maneuver thanks to the rotating handle (more on that later). Overall, this is one of the lightest trimmers we tested in our latest roundup, second only to the Makita 18V max LXT XHU07 and Skil PWRCore 40 HT4221—both of which sport 24-inch bars. That makes the extra weight excusable.

Rotating Handle

Rotating handle

As I already mentioned, this trimmer is very easy to maneuver thanks to the 5-position rotating handle. There are five positive detents that allow you to rotate the rear grip 180 degrees. This is a feature that we love on hedge trimmers because it’s more ergonomic and gives you a ton of versatility while trimming and shaping landscaping features, such as Japanese Boxwoods.

Echo 56V Hedge Trimmer Price

The Echo DHC-2800 retails for $499 as a bare tool and $589 as a kit. The kit includes a 2.5Ah battery and a single-port charger. Echo backs this trimmer with a 2-year warranty for commercial use and a 5-year warranty for residential use.

There’s also a 22-inch model (DHC-2200) that retails for $569.

The Bottom Line

The Echo DHC-2800 makes a strong case for what a modern battery-powered hedge trimmer should be.

It’s fast, smooth, and easy to control, with enough cutting power to handle overgrown hedges without feeling overbuilt for routine maintenance. The high blade speed stands out immediately, while the low vibration and quiet operation make it comfortable to use over longer sessions.

From a design standpoint, the rotating handle and manageable weight help offset the longer bar, giving you the reach you want without sacrificing maneuverability.

It’s not the lightest option out there, and it doesn’t push into the largest cutting capacities available—but for most folks, that’s not the point. This is a well-balanced, professional-grade trimmer that prioritizes performance, control, and ease of use.

If you’re looking to step up from a corded or aging gas model, the DHC-2800 is a confident move into battery without giving up much in the process.
