Ever since the new line of Kobalt power tools hit Lowe’s, the brand has gained significant capabilities. Starting with the Kobalt 24V brushless circular saw, all the new Kobalt brushless tools have shown impressive performance. Driving the Kobalt tools are the new Kobalt 24V Max batteries. Lowe’s has these batteries priced ridiculously low—making them a great value. These batteries allow tools like the Kobalt 24V brushless reciprocating saw to keep up with the big dogs. Kobalt Tool Reviews Reveal an Extra Battery Cell Our Kobalt tool reviews also showed that the new 24V batteries feature an extra cell over 18V/20V tools. Instead of using a series of five 19650 cells, Kobalt tools use six. That 24V battery pack is no joke—it actually packs a punch. The only other company to do this is Hilti with their 22V packs.

When we went to Kobalt’s Press Event in New York where they debuted the new line of 18V Li-ion tools, one of the things we were most impressed with was the Compact Drill Driver. This was a tool that, while not perfect, took a lot of cues from successful products that had come before it. Kobalt’s first foray into the world of Cordless Power Tools didn’t appear to be so introductory as some other manufacturers’ have been. They more or less leapt right into the second generation tools, making themselves more competitive than if they had debuted a product lacking many of the features and qualities we now come to expect.

When Kobalt Tools gets into the power tool business, it’s going to draw attention. This for a variety of reasons, but the most obvious is because Lowe’s already has some excellent value tools already within its walls (Porter-Cable comes to mind). On top of that, Kobalt is billing its new tools as being “tougher than dinner with your mother-in-law”. Now, I like my mother-in-law, so I probably would have went with “tougher than dinner with your soon-to-be-fiance’s father”, but you get the implication. By setting the bar high – and making “toughness” the primary focus, Kobalt’s new line of Lithium-ion power tools were something we really were looking forward to getting our hands on. Of course, the press event was scheduled and held at an art museum… so I guess what Lowe’s is communicating to the tool world is that their new power tools are tough AND pretty. In either case, just what can you expect from the new tools? Lots, if our hands-on experience with them has anything to do with it.

With the recent reintroduction of the Kobalt mechanics tools, we have been eager to put our hands on a set to see what they are all about. The Kobalt 63 Piece Mechanics Tool Set (0338513) that we got in includes some of the most common 1/4″ and 3/8″ drive Metric and SAE sizes sockets that you will need. Things like a 72 tooth ratchet and fully polished chrome plating on all the tools comes standard along with laser etching and red/blue colored markings for easy identification of SAE (standard) and MM (metric) sizes. Kobalt’s 10-Piece SAE Combination Wrench Set is made in USA and includes 10 different SAE sized wrenches from 1/4-inch to 7/8-inch. The wrenches are drop forged and have a nice textured grip so that they won’t easily slip out of hand during use. We found that even when our hands were oily, the wrenches stayed put. They also worked very well with gloves, which is important if you’re used to working with hand protection.

I love comfortable hand tools. Whether its a nicely designed hammer, or a great handle on a screwdriver, a well-designed tool that fits your hand perfectly is all the more easier to use.
