The Milwaukee 10-inch Torpedo Level is an Electrician’s Level that will retail for $30 and has a neat function we’d never seen before. You can “hang” the level right onto a double-gang wall switch and level the switches out by allowing them to protrude through the level itself. So in addition to a four-vial level with rare earth magnets to hold it to steel studs, conduit, or duct work, the 10″ Electrician’s Torpedo Level is a specialized tool for making sure your switches are perfect – before you fasten the plates. But not only switches… flip the torpedo level around, and you can also position it onto a double-gang outlet to line those up as well.
There’s also a notch in the middle of the Milwaukee 10-inch Torpedo Level, which allows it to sit perfectly atop a piece of conduit, with the gap allowing passage of the seam. The rare earth magnets hold it secure, and you can now take what was formerly a two-man job (or a real hassle for one) and turn it into something that is very simple to accomplish on your own.
This Milwaukee 10-inch Torpedo Level is very handy. Retailing at $30, it’s not the cheapest level we’ve seen, but it’s also well-built and has some innovative features that we’ve not experienced from any other manufacturer.
Several electricians I’ve spoken to say that they’d indeed use this level out in the field to speed up the work on higher-end homes where proper leveling of electrical switches and outlets is a must for the discriminating contractor.
About the only downside is that you’ll have to wait until around November of this year (2012) to pick one up.
