Workshop Cleanup Is Fast And Easy With The Ridgid 18V Handheld Vacuum

Having reviewed the original Ridgid R86090B brushless handheld vac way back when Kenny didn’t have as much gray in his beard, and with a second model in between, we’re now on the third generation Ridgid 18V handheld vacuum. We’ve been using it out in our shop to discover what’s new.

Ridgid 18V Handheld Vacuum Performance

Ridgid 18V handheld vacuum

This handheld vac has a familiar look and feel, but make no mistake, this isn’t your Grandma’s old dustbuster. Using a single 18V battery for power and a simple slide switch to activate it, this vac boasts 40 CFM with improved airflow over its predecessor, the R860902. In terms of suction power, the Ridgid R8609021 claims 24.6 inches of water lift. While that’s not going to compare to most wet/dry shop vacs, it’s great for cleaning up sawdust and other light debris.

2-Stage Filtration

There’s a 2-stage filtration system with a removable and washable filter. Keep it clean to maintain maximum suction and cleaning efficiency. These filters are best suited for larger debris particles like sawdust and sand/dirt. Anything smaller, like concrete dust, and a HEPA-certified vacuum is the way to go.

Ridgid 18V Handheld Vacuum Design Notes

Ergonomics

Ridgid 18V handheld vacuum

The Ridgid R8609021B measures 17.5 inches from tip to tail and weighs 3.44 pounds with a 2.0Ah battery (not including the extensions or nozzles). Using the included extension wand, you can clear away pesky cobwebs, clean up the floor around your workbench, or hit the crevices in your miter saw with ease.

Ridgid goes with a top-handle design that’s easy to maneuver and control without excessive wrist fatigue. Even with the extension wand and floor nozzle adding weight to the end, you don’t feel like you’re fighting it.

Canister

The 1.5-pint (0.17 gallons) transparent tank is very easy to remove but remains firmly in place when the vacuum is in use. A rubber gasket and one-way flap at the mouth keep dust and debris from escaping from the collection tank.

When it is time to remove the canister for emptying, just press the release and tilt it forward.

Additional Features

  • Compatible with all Ridgid 18V Batteries
  • AC32VF2 (1 pack) and AC32VF31 (3 pack) replacement filters are available online
