We tested it in both drilling and driving applications. On the drilling side, we easily powered through 2x using a 1/2-inch twist bit as well as a 3/4-inch spade bit, essentially converting our rather expensive lumber to Swiss cheese. Impact drivers still aren’t my go-to for all drilling applications, so I’d still recommend getting the IR 20V Cordless Hammer Drill. However, this impact driver can handle a lot of your drilling needs if you want just one tool, or don’t want to make an extra trip back to the toolbox.
Turning our attention to driving capabilities, it unsurprisingly handled small screws and 3-inch lag bolts without any difficulty. Even with larger 8-inch GRK structural screws, the IR W3111 had no problem setting them in our OSB test block. This gives me a lot of confidence in its ability to take on tough fastening tasks under the hood, or wherever the job takes you.

The W3111 impact driver weighs in at 2.3 pounds as a bare tool and 3.9 pounds with a 5.0Ah battery. It measures 5.2 inches from tip to tail and stands just over 10 inches tall, including the battery. The grip is draped with IR’s unique rubber overmold that really helps you maintain a secure hold on the tool. Even more than the overmold, I LOVE the ergonomics. IR slightly recessed the front of the grip to make room for your fingers, giving it a slimmer profile and a more comfortable feel.
360° LED Light
The LED light isn’t something that normally stands out on a cordless impact driver. However, you’ll notice the difference with Ingersoll Rand’s design. Instead of putting a light on the foot, there’s an LED ring surrounding the collet. Unlike other models that use a similar placement, there’s also a diffuser around the halo. The result is a full, even lighting of your work area.
