Ryobi One+ 18V Trim Router P601
Using a router is a lot like painting a room – in a very short time with just a little effort, you can dramatically change the aesthetic. Run an ogee along a table surface, ease sharp corners, flush cut two pieces, create rabbets, dadoes, and even dovetails. You could haul out the big, corded plunge router but if the job is small enough, that’s like swatting a fly with a sledgehammer. It’s easier to use a trim router for those smaller tasks. As the name of the tool suggests, the Ryobi One+ 18V Trim Router is appropriate for trim work as well as shallow rabbets, dadoes, and more.
The Ryobi One+ 18V Trim Router features a 1/4-inch shank with a die-cast base, a quick release for depth adjustment as well as a micro-depth adjustment, LED work lights, Ryobi’s GripZone overmold, and a single speed at 29,000 no-load RPM.
We’ve talked at length about Ryobi’s knack for making tools with some of the highest bang-for-buck, and it certainly looks like Ryobi has done it with this router. Primarily, we love the cordlessness: if there was ever a tool whose cord got in the way, it has to be the router.
But the promising features don’t stop there. Our more expensive corded routers – trim and plunge – usually don’t have work lights, but this tool does. Its quick and convenient macro- and micro-depth adjustments are quite similar to the Ridgid trim router we recently reviewed. We’re also a fan of the GripZone overmold that we’ve seen on other Ryobi tools recently. The only problem is that it’s not located where you typically hold a trim router.
If there’s one awkward – if unavoidable – feature, it’s the appearance of top-heaviness necessary to accommodate the 18V battery. That’s a small price to pay for being untethered from the power cord, but it might take some time to get acclimated to the form. The lack of an adjustable speed is also noticeable.
