Conquer DIY Staining Projects with Wagner’s 18V Control Spray Stain Sprayer
The world of cordless paint sprayers is still growing, with only a few options on the market from major manufacturers at the time of writing. For wood staining specifically, your options are even more limited. Wagner is introducing its first cordless wood stain sprayer, the 18V Control Spray Stain Sprayer, which runs on the Bosch AmpShare battery platform. I’m examining what makes this tool stand out to see if it’s the right tool for your next wood-staining project.
Wagner 18V Control Spray Stain Sprayer Basics
- Model: Wagner 2476171
- Power source: AmpShare batteries
- Runtime: 13.5 mins (w/ 2.0Ah battery)
- Brushless motor
- Tank capacity: 27 oz
- Lock-N-Go nozzle system
- Control nozzle adjusts between spray angles
This is Wagner’s first cordless dedicated wood stainer. It features a brushless motor that delivers HVLP (high-volume, low-pressure) staining to a variety of wood projects. You can load it with both solid and semi-transparent wood stain. However, it’s not rated for paint or primer, so you should look for a paint-specific sprayer if you wish to paint your project, or you’re after a multi-use sprayer.
For runtimes, Wagner says you can get up to 13.5 minutes of spraying time using a 2.0Ah battery. That equals out to roughly 1 gallon of staining per charge. With the 27 fl. oz. onboard tank, one battery gets you through a little less than five tankfuls in ideal conditions.
On a single tank, the Control Spray Stain Sprayer can cover up to an 8×10-foot area, making it ideal for small- to medium-size staining projects. I can see this coming in handy for things like patio furniture, decking, fencing, and more, especially since Wagner claims it’s up to two times faster than traditional brush staining.
Additionally, you can adjust the spray angle using the onboard control nozzle, which lets you choose between horizontal, vertical, and round spray patterns. A Lock-N-Go system also lets each component detach easily for quick cleanup and easy nozzle changes.
AmpShare Batteries
The SprayTech Control Spray is powered by 18V AmpShare batteries, which are compatible with several tool brands under the AmpShare umbrella. This technology was established by Bosch in 2023 as a way for multiple manufacturers to run on the same battery platform, which is a nice benefit for those who use tools from more than one brand.
The sprayer is compatible with AmpShare battery capacities from 2.0Ah to 6.0Ah, so if you’re working on a larger-scale project, you can extend your runtime with a higher-capacity battery. You’ll still have to refill the tank, so the lighter 2.0Ah packs are the way to go for most people.
Wagner 18V Control Spray Stain Sprayer Price
This sprayer retails for $100 for the bare tool, or $210 as a kit with a 2.0h battery and charger. If you’d like more than one battery, there’s also a two-battery kit for $269. Wagner backs your purchase with a 1-year warranty.
Should You Buy It?
If you’re on the hunt for a cordless solution to make staining projects easier and quicker, Wagner has you covered with the 18V Control Spray Stain Sprayer. While it doesn’t have the kind of capacity we’ve seen on Pro-focused models, (such as Titan’s ControlMax 1650), the compact design keeps the weight to a minimum for less fatigue and easier use.
The AmpShare compatibility adds another layer of convenience, as you can swap out batteries with the rest of the AmpShare manufacturer lineup if any of those brands match up with your needs.
This tool is ideal for DIY projects and small to medium-duty wood-staining applications. If you’re a painting or decking Pro looking for something to use for a variety of larger-scale projects, step up to Titan’s lineup for a commercial build while keeping the AMPShare compatibility.
