The Weller WLC100 consumer-level soldering station is a great first soldering station for any hobbyist or DIYer that plans to perform basic, non-precision soldering tasks. Weller provides a bargain product for those who may want the advantage of replaceable heating elements and soldering tips and variable power (this unit goes from 5W to 40W via the 4-step front dial). A convenient iron stand an integrated tip-cleaning sponge tray makes this a nice all-around unit.

Where the Weller loses some points is in the inclusion of a wider ST3 tip. We prefer the thinner ST1 tip which is of much more use in dealing with smaller electronics such as radio controlled devices. The ST3 will be very useful on more easily accessible objects such as tubes or home-made electronics connections.  The nice thing is that the tips are replaceable and the station can use third party irons, provided they don't exceed 40 watts in power (to preserve the integrity of the temperature station).

This is a great overall tool and we're betting many will find it to be an incredible bargain for under $50.
