Bosch 18V Angle Grinder GWS18V-11PSN

Cordless angle grinders have come a long way over the years, closing the gap between corded power and cordless convenience. The Bosch GWS18V-11PSN is aimed squarely at folks who need a reliable, mid-range grinder that can handle a wide range of cutting and grinding tasks without stepping up to a larger, heavier platform. I spent some time putting it to work to see how it performs where it really counts. Is it the right grinder for you? Let’s find out!

Bosch 18V GWS18V-11PSN Angle Grinder Performance

Speed and Power

Bosch gives this grinder a top speed of 9,000 RPMs, but you can dial back that speed to 3,000 RPM by using the rear-mounted 6-position speed dial. At its heart, you’ll find a brushless motor that churns out 10-amp equivalent power, making it an ideal option for most light to medium-duty cutting and grinding tasks. Here’s a quick look at the max speed in each mode:

Dial PositionRPM
13,000
24,500
35,400
46,200
57,000
69,000
Speed dial

These speeds are consistent with similar 4 1/2-inch models from Ryobi and Ridgid. As I mentioned before, this power level is handy for those light and medium-duty applications, such as knocking off rust/paint, polishing, and cutting frozen nuts and bolts.

You can certainly venture into some of the tougher applications, but Bosch also provides larger 6-inch grinders if you find you need more productivity.

During my hands-on testing, I loaded up a fresh 8.0 Ah battery and went to work on a stout piece of angle iron. My goal primary goal was to see how hard I could bear down on the disc before the motor stalled. What was interesting was that the motor never quit!

I’m sure that I could have applied more pressure and eventually stalled the motor, but that’s simply not practical. The point I’m trying to make is that I can’t imagine a scenario where I would need to reasonably apply more pressure. If you let the discs work as intended, you tend to get good results.

Bosch 18V GWS18V-11PSN Angle Grinder Design Notes

Size, Weight, and Ergonomics

The Bosch 18V GWS18V-11PSN weighs 4.1 pounds as a bare tool and 6.25 pounds with an 8.0 Ah battery installed. It measures 12.25 inches from end to end. This is right on par with what we expect from angle grinders in this class, and it’s a half inch shorter than the Bosch ProFactor GWX18V-50PCN with X-Lock.

Paddle trigger

Bosch opted for a paddle trigger on this model, but a slide-switch version is also available (GWS18V-11SN) if that’s your preference. Personally, I lean toward the paddle trigger design because I feel I have more control while working.

That said, the slide switch model is great for extended use and allows for a variety of hand positions. On the topic of versatility, read on, because Bosch cracked a major pain point for angle grinders.

Rotating Grip

The star of the show on this grinder is the rotating grip. Bosch has solved the age-old problem when it comes to grinder ergonomics.

For years, the primary solutions were to either move the side handle to a new position (if available) or manually remove and rotate the gear housing. Moving the side handle isn’t a major ordeal, but removing the gear housing is far more invasive and could lead to issues down the road if not reinstalled correctly. Plus, moving the side handle doesn’t let you keep the same grip on the tool with respect to the paddle switch.

Bosch solved this issue with their rotating grip. How it works is that you press a small release button on the side of the grip and then rotate it 90 degrees left or right. It only takes a second to reposition and can easily accommodate right and left-handed users. Moreover, the mechanism is tool-free and easy to manipulate while wearing work gloves!

The beauty of this setup is that you can seamlessly switch between a cutting and grinding configuration in a matter of seconds. You can still mount the handle on the right or left side of the motor, but this is a much better, more ergonomic solution that makes the tool much easier to use.

Quick-Change Lock Nut

Tool-Free Spindle Nut

Bosch didn’t include X-Lock on this model. The Quick-Change system, while not a new concept in the world of angle grinders, is still one of the greatest innovations in this category. The benefit of the system is that it doesn’t require a spanner wrench to remove the flange nut.

With that in mind, Bosch is a practical company and decided to go with the classic belt and suspenders approach. Bosch designed the flange nut with slots for a spanner wrench in case it gets too tight to remove by hand. You get the best of both worlds!

Vibration Control

Vibration dampening zone

While vibration isn’t the biggest issue with angle grinders, a little relief never hurt anyone, right? Bosch designed the side handle with an intentional vibration-dampening zone that helps isolate your hand from vibration. This is typically something you’d likely see on a high-impact tool, such as a rotary hammer, but it’s a welcome addition in this case.

Additional Features

  • Tool-Free Guard Adjustment: Quickly position the disc guard to redirect sparks and slag
  • Drop Control: Automatically shuts off the tool if a fall is detected
  • Soft Start: Helps reduce the initial jolt for a smooth startup
  • Kickback Control: Shuts off the tool quickly when the grinding disc binds up

Bosch 18V GWS18V-11PSN Angle Grinder Price

This cordless grinder retails for $199 as a bare tool and comes in two configurations—a paddle trigger (GWS18V-11PSN) and a slide-switch model (GWS18V-11PS). Bosch backs both models with a 5-year limited warranty.

The Bottom Line

After some hands-on time with the Bosch GWS18V-11PSN, it’s clear this grinder hits a sweet spot for light to medium-duty applications. The adjustable speed range and consistent power output give you plenty of control across a variety of tasks, while the strong brushless motor holds up well under pressure without feeling underpowered.

Where this grinder really separates itself is in the design. The rotating grip is a genuinely innovative feature, making it easier than ever to switch between cutting and grinding positions without interrupting your workflow. Add in features like the quick-change lock nut, vibration-dampening handle, and safety elements like Drop Control, kickback protection, and soft start, and you’ve got a well-thought-out tool from top to bottom.

While it’s not intended for heavy industrial work, the GWS18V-11PSN delivers dependable performance for most common cutting and grinding applications.
