Bosch GLM 50 Laser Distance Measure Preview

Ever since the Bosch DLR130K Laser Distance Measurer we’ve been keeping an eye on these products. This week, Bosch launched the new GLM 50, which is a budget product designed to be a simple yet durable project for those who don’t quite need all of the features of their more advanced models. This also allows them to keep it simple, pricing the laser distance measurer at around $120 (street). In our mind, this makes the GLM 50 a great solution for users who need a simplified, yet durable laser distance measurer for daily use on the jobsite. The Bosch GLM 50 Laser Distance Measure claims accuracy to within 1/16 of an inch and can measure distances up to 165 feet, though you won’t be able to do that outdoors without a laser target to see where you’re aiming. There are five commonly-used measuring modes that you can cycle through by toggling a single ‘Mode’ button: length, area, volume, continuous and indirect height. Three measuring reference points are also available, so you can take a measurement from the front, back and center of the unit with an optional tripod. The only measuring point that’s missing is the corner point which requires an adapter and accounting for the increased distance off the back of the GLM 50.

The Bosch GLM 50 Laser Distance Measure is quite compact and has a slim design with a large, three-line, automatic backlit display that looks easy to read in both daylight and dimly lit interiors. Its simplified seven-button design includes the most widely-used functions communicated clearly for ease of use. Round buttons with a silicone overlay offer users the best feel, while large soft grip areas surrounding the tool make the unit look and feel like it can take some abuse in the field. Bosch claims that the tool has also been jobsite tested and is protected against dust and water to IP 54. It’s also drop resistant to 3 feet which means that, while it won’t take a fall from a helicopter, it’s still pretty durable.

The Bosch GLM 50 Laser Distance Measure is now available through authorized Bosch distributors nationwide. Included are a belt pouch and carry loop, two AA batteries and a user manual which you may actually need to read for advanced functions).
