Bosch Cordless Oscillating Tool Review

If you love multi-tools but have questions about which model will work best for you, I have great news for you. We recently had the chance to test out 26 corded and cordless models in our Oscillating Multitool Shootout. Today, we’re looking at a model of the battery-powered variety, the Bosch cordless oscillating tool. In our head to head shootout, it finished 3rd in the cordless division and 11th overall.

Pros

  • Starlock accessory changes
  • Excellent vibration control

Cons

  • Bulky, somewhat boxy handle design
  • Fairly heavy

The Bottom Line

The Bosch 18V oscillating tool finished our shootout in a respectable 11th place, overall. It gained a lot of ground with us thanks to its Starlock accessory changing system, and it performed well in our performance tests. Out team wishes that it wasn’t quite as bulky as it is, but it definitely feels like it will outlast the 1-year warranty it comes with. Ultimately, if you’re a fan of the brand’s 18V battery platform, you’ll probably gravitate toward this model, which isn’t a bad thing at all.

Blade Changes

The Bosch cordless oscillating tool features our favorite accessory interface, the Starlock system. Not only does the Starlock interface provide an excellent grip on the blade, allowing for better torque transfer, but this system also allows for one-handed, tool-free blade changes.

With this system, you pull back on the blade lever to eject your old blade from the blade mount. Then, simply press the tool down onto the new blade until it clicks into place.

Ergonomics

While not the whole story, weight will play a big part in how we rate a tool’s ergonomics. At 4.46 lbs with a Core 18V battery attached, the Bosch cordless oscillating tool has some heft to it. That’s not a surprise since cordless tools often weigh more than the corded varieties, mostly due to the battery’s extra weight. With that said, even amongst cordless models, this 18V Bosch feels a little heavy.

Unfortunately, it also has a really boxy frame and a larger handle diameter. While this model isn’t necessarily what we would call “unwieldy,” our testing team would appreciate a slimmer handle design.

Performance

The cordless Bosch 18V oscillating tool features an EC brushless motor for increased runtime and durability. Bosch claims that this motor provides 30% more power than their previous 18V motors. Realistically, what all this translates to in terms of performance is a tool that gets the job done smoothly, though not necessarily with blazing speed.

It doesn’t cut slowly, but we did test faster models. This might have something to do with the 2.8° oscillation angle more than the actual power being produced, as this multi-tool still cranks out 8,000 – 20,000 OPM.

Vibration

Due to the oscillating mechanism, multi-tools have a tendency to shake around a lot. So vibration control, or lack thereof, will be an important feature on a multi-tool. Fortunately, the Bosch 18V oscillating tool covers this area pretty effectively. While not totally devoid of any sort of vibration, Bosch’s cordless model minimizes a lot of the vibration that can get pretty taxing on bigger jobs.

Noise

Oscillating multi-tools also tend to cause a bit of a racket. On all of the models we tested, the noise generation ranged from 92 dB(A) to 104 dB(A). Even the quietest of these machines successfully avoids being whisper-quiet. You’ll definitely notice the difference between the machine generating 92 dB(A) and the one cranking out 104 dB(A). This multi-tool falls in the middle of that spectrum at 98 dB(A). It’s still loud, but not nearly as loud as it could be.

Value

The Bosch 18V oscillating tool retails at $199 for the bare tool. It also comes with a 1-year warranty. This price stays consistent with the brand, meaning that Bosch tools won’t blow your mind from a price perspective, but you’re also generally paying for quality and durability.

There are much cheaper models available, but we also know that you often get what you pay for. Bosch has a pretty good reputation for making well-built tools, and this cordless oscillating tool feels very well-built. It’s a decent value at this price, but will probably mostly appeal to folks who already operate on the Bosch 18V platform.
